everyone should absolutely check out Real Emotional Trash in its entirety. i dont find it as all inclusive in as little time as (my fav) face the truth but maybe it needs more time. pig lib initially rubbed me wrong with its lack of joyous hooks from the eponymous. there are some really top-notch pretty little tune-skis (Cold Son, We Can't Help You, Gardenia) and a lot of heavy Jick-ery (titular cut, shhhhhyeah!) i think the allmusic analysis is the closest to how i feel because it seems to be the only voice willing to take malkmus on his own and not ressurect the holy ghost of indie-rock (that 90s band he was in) its weird that for amount of listening hours logged i'm more of a solo malkmus fan than pavement fan. granted i listened to his first album a lot when i still only knew a random smattering of pavement material. where does everybody fall?
i'm totally giddified (speaking in the voice of geddy lee...?) to see sm&jicks in april when they come to the beantown.
giddified for sxsw
natch
and i ordered the album from matador so i gots a POSTER
yay
I liked the slipcase, but no poster for me.
As I see it, the melodies have never gotten simpler along the sm career arc, but the sounds have gotten prettier. I mean, the jicks homepage mentioned involving "TJ Doherty, fresh from a Donald Fagen session in Kauai". Need I say more?
The record sounds tighter than ever (if you read the odd Pitchfork review, ProTools was involved). I second you, Vlad, how 'bout that nasty wah guitar part into the outro of "Real Emotional Trash"?
Most of all, I'm psyched to see the band at MassMoCA on Apr 4.
